2011 New Year's Eve Buffets at City Hotels

This post goes totally against the theme (and ideals) of this site as it promotes no bargain at all, but will rather burn several (unworthy) holes in your pockets. New Year's Eve and Day is that time of year when hotels up the prices of their buffets to serve the exodus of revellers wanting to eat out while the numerals of the year increase by a digit. Needless to say, it is not financially the best of times to savour hotel food. But then, who wants to sit at home - watching some boring old TV and eating the regular delivered-pizza - while counting down to the new year? We all need excitement in our lives, plus you have to find ways to spend that bountiful bonus too. So here's a sample of some of the city's top hotels and the prices of their new year buffets:

AIS Movie Month & True Move Movie Lovers at Major & EGV

Watching a movie at a cinema in Bangkok can set you back anywhere between 120-180 baht for just a normal seat ticket. So it does help to take advantage of all the discounts available to reduce the pinch to our wallets. There are bargains galore for movie lovers these past couple of months at the Major and EGV group of cineplexes, some of them are as follows:

The AIS Movie Month promotion gives users of the AIS mobile network discounts for all movies every Saturday and Sunday at just 60 Baht per ticket until Jan 2, 2011. The catch here is that your monthly call charges - prepay or postpay - should average 300 baht per month, and the discount is for 1 seat/per number (only normal seats) at normal cinemas (not the digital ones) at Paragon Cineplex, Esplanade Cineplex, Paradise Cineplex, Major Cineplex and EGV all branches. To check if you are eligible for the offer, call *545*0# and wait for the message.
PS - Instead of the advertised 60 baht, we were charged 80 baht per ticket while using this offer (not sure why).

Major Cineplex also has the ongoing promo of Wednesdays as Movie Days, when all tickets are priced at 80 Baht.

True Move Movie Lovers promotion is, as the name suggests, for users of True Move to avail the 'buy one get one' deals on movie tickets at all cinemas of Major Cineplex, EGV, Paragon Cineplex and Esplanade Cineplex. But there are limited number of 'free' seats being given out each week and month (4,500 tickets per month), so you have a greater chance of bagging the offer in the beginning of the week than, say, in the weekends. This offer has been going on for quite some time and is until March 2011. To avail the offer, you have to send an SMS with an 'M' to the number 9989. You will receive a password if seats are still available, or else an informative message, if not.

There are several other ways to watch movies at cheaper rates, for example if you are over 60 years you can avail of the senior price of just 80 baht a ticket.

For a list of all promos, go to http://www.majorcineplex.com/promotion_all.php

Mansion 7

Mansion 7 is Bangkok's latest niche concept retail & lifestyle complex on Ratchadaphisek Road. It is a "Boutique Thriller Mall" - a combination of "Boutique Mall" and a "Haunted Thrill Park" - that aims to attract young urbanites to a new leisure & shopping experience. The Mansion 7 is scheduled to open on October 31, Halloween Day - in line with its theme of eerie darkness and a haunted house - feeding on Thais' fascination with ghosts.

The complex has 41 tenant shops, divided into three major zones: fashion, restaurants and playground, including several bars, ice-cream outlets and even a 'Beer Mansion'. The main entertainment attraction though is a three-storey haunted ghost house named "Dark Mansion" occupying about 900 sq.m. area - and, like those at the amusement parks, there is entrance fees.

Mansion 7 is located at Ratchada 14 near Huai Khwang MRT station and it is open from noon to midnight (12:00 - 24:00). For more details, visit their haunting website: www.themansion7.com

Paradise Park

Paradise Park is the latest addition to Bangkok's myriad of shopping malls, lest you be deceived by the misleading name into thinking its a park. Located on the Srinakharin Road in eastern Bangkok, it occupies the building that once housed the Seri Center shopping centre. The building has been completely refurbished, with the only remnants of the old shopping centre found in the Seri Market which still takes up a section of the Ground floor. For updated info about the shops, eateries and others that you can find there, check out their website: http://www.paradisepark.co.th

Here are 5 reasons why you should visit the Paradise Park:
- it is the newest mall in town
- to kill time, as you have nothing better to do
- you are bored to death of walking the same old aisles of the same old malls for probably the hundredth time in a year
- you need a new topic to chat/discuss with your colleagues about during lunch hour & also don't want to feel left out when hearing others talk about it.
- your quest for that dream pair of shoes and dress has not yet been fulfilled by the existant dozens of malls
